William Carlos Williams is recognized as one of the leading poets of the first half of the twentieth century, and was applauded for carving a unique identity in poetry. One of the most distinct features of William Carlos Williams poetry is his choice to ignore measures by count and instead, to base his poetry on its sound or the “simple rightness of his eye and ear.” Williams wanted the poems to read naturally to a person, flowing smoothly like music. A similar breaking from measure had arisen with free verse, but Williams disagreed with this as being a contradiction. Verse implies some kind of measure and so, free verse seemed a contradictory form. Williams instead utilized a technique called variable foot which involved a visual structuring of the lines. The poem was broken down with every three lines structured so each line was indented further than the last. Every line in these sets represented a beat. However, criticism of Williams’ strategy arose over the fact that it only worked in his head and may not fit every reader. Each person reads things differently, and so, it can register with an incorrect measure in many readers’ minds.
The other feature of William Carlos Williams writing was his separation from his writing, and its emphasis on the object. Williams stayed away from philosophy and metaphysics, believing that poetry should contain “no ideas but in things.” This is clear by his famous poem, “The Red Wheelbarrow,” in which Williams describes the wheelbarrow using no other descriptive terms than those physically visible. As part of this, Williams had purged “I” from his writing since there was no need to include his own presence when describing an image.
Taking these ideas, the first thing seen when reading the poem “Of Asphodel, That Greeny Flower” is its fitting into Williams “variable foot” structure. The thirty page poem is broken up into three books. The lines of each book are structured in the sets of three lines so that a sequence of lines in the poem would appear as follows:

Other, less poetic tales claim that the tusk was removed by a villain who stole it to make ivory ear-rings for beautiful ladies.
It is not always instantly clear that a Ganesh statue has 4 (and sometimes more) arms. Some may be shown in abhaya pose that’s held up with palm out and fingers directed upwards, while the second holds a sweet, a symbol of the interior self. And the second two hands will most likely contain a goad and a noose, the former used to prod followers down the path of truth, as the latter signifies the snare of earthly desires. At his feet most statues of Ganesh display a mouse, his standard steed. The mouse is the symbolic representation of the intellect, wandering in and out, but tamed from the greater power of the whole.
Many devotees believe the odd shape of the one tusked elephant headed God mimics the symbol AUM, a symbol which connotes the primeval sound which was the first thing to be created and from which the remainder of the world arose. This is the symbolic representation that is commonly used to signify all Hinduism and its beliefs.
Even though the Hindu religion has 4 primary denominations, all worship Ganesh, in whose image is found across India, Nepal and many regions of the Far East. For Buddhists Ganesh appears as the god Vinayaka and is commonly displayed dancing. His statues appear in Nepal and Tibet. In Japan he is viewed as a minor god and young adults call on him when looking for success in love. Throughout Malaysia, Java, Bali and Borneo there are temples to Ganesh as well as in Thailand. There his placement as remover of obstacles and patron of the arts mean that there is a service where offerings are made to Ganesh prior to any movie or TV series begins shooting.
Indonesia is a Muslim country, however even there Ganesh is revered and his image can be found in many Cambodian temples. Yet despite spreading throughout the Eastern world Ganesh was not known in Europe until fairly recently, though some scholars, commenting on a statue of Ganesh where he’s shown with two heads (one of an elephant one of a man) facing in opposite directions have compared the image to that of Janus, the two headed God of the Romans, but no actual link between the two have been identified.
No matter what your view on the gods of the east or of the ancients, their statues and associated symbolism are always thought provoking. However we view something, other cultures frequently saw it very differently; one reason museum quality statues along with other artifacts make fascinating and artistic conversation pieces for any home.
