This is due to the fact the first world war has devastated a lot o properties and the cry for freedom and life has been happening during that era. By the time things had subsided, people came out with a burning desire to express themselves without restriction. The 1920s was marked by social and industrial change. Experimental and innovative business practices are beginning to emerge. Defying social customs has been done by women and they made their voices notably louder. And they did this by doing things that were considered taboo during these times. But their major contribution to the change of the times was made through fashion. Dresses were no longer restrictive and nauseating (due to extremely tight corsets they had to wear under those waist-hugging dresses). By this time, hemlines went up to the knees and hair was cut very short for the first time. Female outfits became bold and darker. I had been to a friend’s house fairly recently and, though I don’t usually notice, I became fascinated with his decor. It went with his house, originally built in the 1920’s and made a warm, fascinating interior nicely suited to his huge collection of books.
My house is instead more modern, so when I considered ways of decorating my home (something I had been advised was ‘up to me’) I declined the steam punk idea. From Ramses who drove out the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh, to the idea of Maat, goddess of justice and order, the wall sculptures of the Ancient Egyptians carry an endless captivation. We’re more familiar with color when it comes to Egypt, and hence see these more as they really were, vibrant and dazzling in the desert sunlight.
For my Bedroom the primary options are evident; Thoth, the god of writing and wisdom, to help keep me right all the time!
