Buddhism is a religion based on the teachings of Buddha which are referred to as “Dharma” or “the Dharma.” Buddhist believe they are on a spiritual journey to Nirvana, a state of complete enlightenment. Over time the Buddhist religion has evolved, fractured and adapted as it spread through Asia and eventually the globe. Today, there are three major sects of Buddhism and several smaller variants of the religion.
Despite their differences, these variations of the Buddhist religion still share core principles. They all accept Buddha as their spiritual teacher. The Four Noble Truths are core to their philosophies and teachings. Those who practice Buddhism follow the principles of the Eightfold Path and believe that Buddhahood is the highest possible state that one could achieve.
Around 300 BC, the Theravada, or “Traditions of the Elders” was first established. This religion centered around the teachings of Buddha and encouraged it’s followers to teach the mind to eliminate suffering through the use of meditation with the ultimate goal of reaching Nirvana. Theravada Buddhism established the canon of Buddhist scriptures and the laws governing the practices of Buddhist monks referred to as the Ten Precepts.
This discipline of Buddhism began in India and migrated to southeast Asia into Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and other Asian countries. As this form of Buddhism was embraced by the indigenous people, the Theravada was altered to incorporate the religious viewpoints of the various regions. It is still practiced in Sri Lanka, Laos and Cambodia today.
Mahayana, or Eastern Buddhism, broadens the Buddhist scriptures to include other religious texts and philosophies that champion of belief in universal compassion and altruism. These beliefs are central to their concept of an “Awakened mind.” Mahayana Buddhism is most popular in Korea, Japan and China. It incorporates elements of cosmology and mysticism. This form of Buddhism has divided into two main sects. Zen Buddhism, which focuses more on internalization of the spiritual path and self-reliance and Pure Land Buddhism which teaches that dedication to the Amitabha Buddha is required to reach Nirvana.
Vajrayana or Tibetan Buddhism is very similar to Mahayana Buddhism with subtle variations. Also known as “tantric Buddhism,” Vajrayana incorporates text and scriptures from both Mahayana and Theraveda Buddhism along with Buddhist Tantras. Vajrayana teaches that it is possible to achieve Buddhahood in a single lifetime without the journey of reincarnation.
The method in which one achieves enlightenment is the most significant difference between the various types of Buddhism. each value meditation and spiritual journey guided by the eightfold Path and the four Noble truths, but the attainment of Buddhahood differs in each version of the Buddhist faith.

Pay a visit to an art museum and you will find paintings that are hundreds of years old. They have been well cared for through proper cleaning, proper lighting levels, and humidity and temperature control. One need not live in a museum in order to possess great works of art that will remain in superb shape and last for many years. Painted works of art naturally change in time, but following steps will help you care for your paintings and keep them looking like new for years to come.
Install a backing board in order to stretch canvas painted works of art. Paintings on stretched canvas are usually open in the back and the opening may cause paintings to be affected by the environment; they may crack, flake and age more rapidly. Care for a painted work of art by having a backing board professionally attached to the frame. The backing board will prevent the infiltration of air, dust, dirt, and debris. The back of a painting does not require ventilation, and it is best protected if it is completely sealed.
Hang securely to prevent damage. One of the most common ways in which paintings are damaged is through inappropriate hanging. A hanger or nail in a wall can give way, and a painting that is not properly outfitted with a wire hanger can fall to the floor. Care for paintings before they are ever hung by always using double-braided wire in lieu of other types of hanging apparatuses. In addition, securely attach the braided wire to the frame around the painting rather than the frame the canvas is stretched around. In lieu of ordinary nails, hang painted works of art on mounting hooks that are firmly secured into the wall and that can hold more than the weight of the painting. When properly outfitted with hardware and hung on secure hooks, painted and framed works of art will never fall off walls and become irreparably damaged.
Take care by maintaining proper humidity. Humidity fluctuations can damage paintings and wood frames. Proper care is necessary, and it is crucial to maintain lower humidity. Fifty percent humidity is ideal for displaying and storing paintings. Most of all, avoid suddenly changing the level of humidity. Surprisingly, great fluctuations in humidity are far more damaging than storing paintings in less than ideal humid locations.
Control all types of lighting. Natural as well as artificial lighting can be hot and will damage paintings and frames. Maintain care by keeping paintings away from sunny windows or bright sources of artificial light. Also, do not use wall-mounted lights typically used for displaying and highlighting paintings. The bulbs can become hot, and when placed too close to paintings or even the frames, paintings can become very dry and eventually damaged. In lieu of using possibly harmful lighting, take care by choosing recessed lighting, lighting that is adjustable, indirect natural light, or tungsten lamps.
Regulate temperature. When striving to maintain proper care through light and humidity control, it is also crucial to maintain temperatures that are ideal for displaying and storing paintings. As a general rule, if the temperature is cozy for humans, it is ideal for displaying and storing painted works of art.
Avoid smoking and spray products. Smoke will fade works of art and leave them covered in a layer of fine soot. Sources of smoke like fireplaces can also destroy and soil paintings. Prohibit smoking in the home or building, and do not hang paintings near a fireplace or another source of smoke that can coat and discolor works of art. In addition, do not spray air freshener or other products around or near paintings.
Care for works of art by preventing dust build-up. Just like other works of art, paintings require occasional dusting, but take care not to use items that can inadvertently scratch or flake away paint. Use a microfiber cloth or a brush with very soft bristles. A natural sable brush is ideal to care for and clean dust from the surface of paintings as well as the nooks and crannies of delicate frames.
Soiled paintings should be cleaned with care. If paintings at least six months old become soiled and a light dusting is insufficient, use a microfiber cloth dampened with a mixture of distilled water and a small amount of very mild detergent to clean the surface. Using a clean microfiber cloth or fabric that is equally as soft, take care by ringing out the cloth after dipping it in clean distilled water, and gently remove the detergent and dirt. Allow the surface to air-dry to avoid putting undue pressure on the canvas. This type of maintenance should only be utilized if a painted work of art is truly dirty.
With proper care, the colors in paintings will remain true. In addition, when stored in an ideal environment, paintings will remain in excellent condition. With the appropriate maintenance museum quality painted works of art can become heirloom treasures that are passed down from generation to generation while still looking as fabulous as they did they day they were created.

The game of chess hasn't always looked the way it does today. Over time the pieces and the rules have changed drastically. The original game played would have been unrecognizable to modern eyes, and our version of chess didnt develop until the 1400’s.
The first Chess set is believed to have been invented in India, sometime before 500 AD. When it spread to Persia it was called shatranj, which is just a persian translation of the original sanscrit word. The muslims retained the Persian name when they adopted it for themselves. By 700 AD a version of the game had also reached mainland china where it was called Xiangqi, another modification of an Indian word.
In Europe, the game started to take on its current form around 1200 AD, and by 1475 it looked very much like the modern game we play. These standard rules developed in southern Italy, or possibly in Spain, but they spread throughout Europe rather quickly.
The standardization of this game which had for centuries given rise to variations was due to a number of factors. First, these rules were developed during the renaissance, a time of unprecedented learning and sharing of information. In this climate, the philosophy of chess developed, with strategies and mathematical analysis of the game becoming relatively widespread. In order to be sure that someone in England was theorizing about the same game as someone in Germany, a standard set of rules had to be agreed upon. In this way the development of the standard chess set is due largely to the development of chess theory.
This effect was furthered by the fact that the printing press was invented in the 1430’s. With printing now easy and affordable treatises on chess and strategy could be easily spread throughout Europe. This led to the development of tournaments and eventually rankings, which also helped to solidify chess.
When european expansion began to dominate and colonize the world, they brought their own style of chess to these new regions. In this way they took a game which was invented in India, and which had been played in china and the Middle East for hundreds of years, and reintroduced a new version to these cultures.
Today there are many different types of chess sets, but in general the rules are the same throughout the world. There are some variations such as Chinese checkers, but in general these are designated under different names, and chess means a game played by a standard set of rules.
